East meets West through the unifying force of music in the World of Music Concert program Saturday, January 28, 2023 at the Intercontinental Hotel Sanur.
Johann Sebastian Bach solo cello and violin sonatas are soothingly familiar and contrast with Hindemith’s solo cello sonata that is marked and forceful, capturing raw unfiltered emotion as does Toccata for piano by Levi Gunardi, prominent Indonesian composer and pianist. Bela Bartok’s Pieces for Children arranged for string orchestra are based on modal East European Folk Melodies and show striking contrasts in character and emotion a continent away from Sumatra but not too different in melodic structure from Alusi Au, a Batak Folk Song. Sacred vocal classics by Mascagni Ave Maria and Boyce Alleluia exude reverence and faith. The same sense of fervor can be found in national Indonesian songs Indonesia Pusaka and Rayuan Pulau Kelapa. Balinese gamelan music provides the accompaniment for Gabor a welcoming dance and Condong part of the Legong dance. Composer Erik Dominikus emulates the gamelan’s rich mesmerizing texture in a work for string orchestra, Short Karawitan.
World of Music performers include world class cellist Leslie Tan (Singapore), Noprananta Dwi Putra Panamuan, Tenor. Exception young award winning artists Amenangi (9) piano, Aileen February (12) violin, Putu Ayu (7) balinese dance and the Bali Children and Teen Choir, Narwastu Art Community and Amabile String Ensemble with conductor Edward Van Ness (Medan).
This concert is raising funds for the Be Sharp Bali Foundation that provides free instruments and music tuition to underprivileged students in Bali.
